Perhaps as you say, someone will happen along and have an informed view they'll share. that was the other alternative I thought might be worth exploring. It might be the way the shapes are constructed. As I recall, those shapes were in a group, in a group (I've deleted your file off my iPad now so forgive if I recall incorrectly). Of course I could be wrong and you might waste your time. My instinct is to maybe duplicate the file and change layers around as a 'play', to see if it affects behaviour.
